Tree Pruning & Crown Reduction

Tree Pruning

The pruning of trees is a fine art only to be undertaken by the qualified and experienced arboriculturist. Roots offer a wealth of experience in Tree Pruning from small Trees in Gardens to magnificent Specimen Trees in parkland and private Country Houses.

Producing strong structure should be the emphasis when pruning young trees. As trees mature, the aim of pruning will shift to maintaining tree structure, form, health and appearance.

The most common types of pruning are:

Crown Thinning

Primarily for hardwoods, this is the selective removal of branches to increase light and air flow throughout the crown of a tree. The intent is to maintain or develop a tree’s structure and form. To avoid unnecessary stress and prevent excessive production of epicormic sprouts, no more than one-quarter of the living crown should be removed at a time. If it is necessary to remove more, it should be done over successive years.

Crown Raising

The practice of removing branches from the bottom of the crown of a tree to provide clearance for pedestrians, vehicles, buildings, lines of site, or to develop a clear stem for timber production. Also, removing lower branches on white pines can prevent blister rust. For street trees the minimum clearance is often specified by municipal ordinance. After pruning, the ratio of the living crown to total tree height should be at least two-thirds (e.g., a 12 m tree should have living branches on at least the upper 8 m).

Crown Reduction

This is most often used when a tree has grown too large for its permitted space. This method, sometimes called drop crotch pruning, is preferred to topping because it results in a more natural appearance, increases the time before pruning is needed again, and minimizes stress.

Tree Removal & Felling

Roots Tree & Hedge Care carry out all aspects of tree work including Felling, Dismantling and Removal across Essex.

When we call to survey the site we ascertain whether the tree in question is in a conservation area or covered by a “Tree Preservation Order” (TPO). We will discuss different methods of dismantling the tree to suit yourselves and do a health and safety risk assessment.

Fully Insured and Qualified Arborists.

Extra care is always taken when working on or near to private property. We use ropes and safety equipment to remove small branches from the tree. All waste will be removed from site with the area left tidy upon job completion.

Stump Grinding & Removal

An essential service in tree care, focusing on eliminating the remaining tree stump after a tree has been cut down. These processes help ensure safety, improve aesthetics, and prevent future issues such as pest infestations and regrowth.

We are professional arborists with many years of experience offering both services. Hiring us ensures you quickly and effectively return the area once occupied by the tree stump to useful and usable land. We will leave the site of the removed stump and accessible roots system ready for turfing over, replanting, landscaping, or to be built over.

Emergency Tree Services / Site Clearance

Rapid response for storm damage and hazardous trees. Call us for a quick response and a competitive quote.

Site clearance is a vital process in land development and construction, involving the removal of vegetation, debris, and unwanted structures to prepare a site for new projects.

We have undertaken numerous site clearance projects to clear trees, plants and scrub.
